The first snowfalls and cold winter conditions can arrive in the Autumn months. In early October 2012 there was snow and sub zero temperatures on the higher Cairngorm summits. This time of year can be a real shock to the system with much shorter days, winds more severe and usually much colder. This one day introduction to winter we run through the basics of preparing for a day out in the Scottish or indeed any hills in he UK at the start of a winter season.

• Packing the rucksack and equipment choice.
• Looking at weather forecasts.
• Route choice
• 'Looking after yourself' on the hill and good pacing for the day.
