THE SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS

The Cobbler

Only a short drive from the Central Belt of Scotland and there are many dramatcic and accessible hills and mountains to explore. Mountains like Ben Lawers, Beinn Lui, Ben Cruachan and The Cobbler are all well known but there is also a wealth of lesser known and lower summits to walk.

Ben Cruachan Oct 2008

Ben Cruachan is a very fine mountain over toward the west coast in Argyll. Just a short distance from Oban or Tyndrum. It offers excellent ridge walking over several summits. Fantastic views over to Glencoe and the west coast. No scrambling is required.

Meall Garbh summit, Tarmachan Ridge. Jan 2008

The Ben Lawers range of mountains by Loch Tay are surrounded by many Munros. Possibly the finest ridge walk in the area is the wonderful Tarmachan Ridge. Comprising only one Munro summit but to walk all four mountain tops is the finest way to enjoy the mountain. Meall Garbh is in my opinion the finest part of the walk, a narrow ridge and spectacular in winter.

An Stuc from the summit of Ben Lawers. Dec 2005

Ben Lawers at 1215m is the 10th highest mountain in the UK. It can be climbed alone or for a much more satisfying day the walk over the other four Munro summits along the ridge is a classic. These hills are amongst the highest ground in Perthshire and enjoy a slightly better climate than on the west coast.
